There are so many EMDR basic training programs! How do I decide which one is a good fit for me? Well, that depends on a number of things.

Most EMDR basic trainings approved by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) are priced about the same. Some programs spread the 2 or 3 weekends of training over a period of several months. People come and take one weekend of training and then some months later might take the next part of the basic training. Unfortunately, because one weekend of training is inadequate for many clinicians working with more complex trauma cases, the therapists often have difficulties with these clients early on and without additional training and consultation support, they often quit using EMDR altogether. It is important to find a training program such as ours which provides the complete training over 3 months and also provides ongoing case consultation to provide support during the learning phase of integrating EMDR therapy into your clinical practice.

Another factor to be considered is whether or not the EMDR trainer is actually experienced in the use of EMDR with challenging cases. How can you tell? All of the EMDRIA-approved programs are required to use the Shapiro text as the primary reference source. The trainers lecture on this material to explain it and to answer questions. They might show video recordings of memory reprocessing. However, some programs use role-play tapes and not sessions of work with real clients. It’s just not the same as seeing work with actual clients and having discussions about the EMDR therapy process with your own clients.
